The American University in Cairo was founded in 1919, and is a pioneering American educational institution that provides an outstanding education in the English language and is the center of cultural, social, and intellectual life in the Arab world. The university is considered a meeting place for world cultures and a forum for discussion and extending the bonds of understanding between different cultures due to the diversity of the cultures of students, parents, faculty members, workers, members of the Council of Guardians, alumni, and its honorable supporters who belong to more than 60 countries around the world. American University in Cairo - Tahrir Square

The historic AUC Tahrir Square campus is a landmark and cultural oasis in the heart of Cairo. A gathering place for lovers of literature, theatre and all forms of arts and culture, the campus includes the two-story AUC Bookstore and café, lecture halls, the Margon Veillon Gallery of Modern Egyptian Art, and two permanent exhibition spaces.

Inside the Historic Palace, the building is Oriental Hall and Ewart Memorial Hall. Ewart has a long history of distinguished guests including Om Kolthoum, who performed there in 1937, prominent Egyptian intellectual Taha Hussein and top dignitaries, ambassadors, and intellectuals from around the world. Today, Ewart and Oriental halls continue to serve as the prime downtown destination for a range of conferences, lectures, seminars and public events held by the University.

The AUC Tahrir Square campus is also home to the University's School of Continuing Education, AUC School of Business Executive Education, engineering services and the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies.  The University’s School for Continuing Education is the largest component of the university’s continued presence in Tahrir Square. The school provides educational opportunities to more than 45,000 students of all ages, offering professional training and certificate programs in Arabic and translation studies, business studies, computer and information technology studies, education, English language studies, and youth and special studies.

Designed to accommodate 5,500 full-time students and 1,500 faculty and staff, AUC’s $400 million, 260-acre campus is technologically advanced and environmentally sensitive. Offering state-of-the-art resources to students and faculty from around the world, the campus weaves Egyptian urban and architectural traditions into a modern campus and is designed to be accessible to persons with disabilities.

American University in Cairo - New York Office

The University has maintained an administrative office in New York City since its earliest days. AUC’s New York Office employees and interns administer the institution’s outreach to U.S.-based constituents, including donors, alumni, partner universities, lawmakers, financial associates, educational and Middle East policy analysts, as well as prospective study-abroad students and their families. The New York Office also plays a major role in preparing many American and Canadian students for the cultural, academic and communication challenges associated with studying in Egypt.

In addition to managing issues related to the University’s Board of Trustees, the functions of the New York Office include institutional advancement, student and faculty recruitment, finance, government relations, human resources, and AUC Press.

AUC’s investment function is now based in Arizona to manage the University’s endowment, in addition to a representative of AUC Press, who facilitates marketing in the United States is now in California.

Furthermore, the New York Office coordinates with government relations staff members housed in Washington for greater proximity to stakeholders in the U.S. legislative and policy communities.
